Gay Culture - Is It Still Out There?

I was thinking about how gay culture is more acceptable in mainstream culture than it was say 20 years ago, 10 years ago, or 5 years ago.  Then I started doing so reading on the subject and when I did some searches results came up like the death of gay culture.  Has the culture of the gay male be polluted by main the acceptance of mainstream society and is it in fact dying?  I would have to say the answer is no.

In the end (no pun intended) gay men have a bond that no straight man or woman can compete with and that is being gay.  A straight person may immerse themselves into gay culture which may give them a better understanding like learning about African American culture or Japanese culture but if you are not African American or Japanese you can never truly understand what it is to be like them.  Mainstream society likes to pull out the parts and stereotype traits they like about gay men.  How many times have you heard that gay men are good dancers or good with fashion?  We are so funny and always on the cutting edge of new trends.

The reality is that we are already a part of mainstream society as we are born into it.  However we have to learn how to merge our gay male culture with the culture into which we are born.  Coming to terms with your sexuality and coming into you takes many different events or situations we must face as gay men.  Many of us have at some point in our lives been threatened, teased, or made not to feel normal.  There is coming out to your family and friends, which can turn out positive or negative but is always an emotional ride.   There is that club culture that many of us go through at some phase of our gay experience which can include many excesses in drugs, alcohol, and sex.  There are so many life experiences that as a gay male culture make us who we are that it can't die.  To be honest there are some aspects of gay male culture that would simply be unappealing to many straight people (especially straight men).

So while I'm all for equal rights and for an understanding and acceptance of all people and all cultures I just don't think that gay male culture is in danger of dying any time soon.  Sure, mainstream culture will continue to incorporate parts of other cultures, including gay male culture.  However, there will still be parts of gay culture that will remain unique to us.  So embrace and be proud of your gay culture it's a part of who we are.

This is sounding too serious like a gay after school special so...Now, you go girl, get out there and dance to the new hip song that straight people don't know yet while drinking that new drink they don't know about yet while cruising the super hot hung like a porn model guy at bar that will be your one night stand that better be out of your pad by 6:00 AM so you can make decadent delight muffins to take to the office and show off your way cool new suit.  Whooo... it's tough being gay.
