Creepy Sunshine Skyway Bridge

Yesterday, when I was driving up to Clearwater for Dorothy’s wake I had to go over the Sunshine Skyway Bridge.  It was so rainy and the weather was so bad you could not even see this huge bridge up close or from a distance.  Here is a photo of the bridge, it’s a beautiful piece of engineering and art:

The problem is that this thing is huge and steep so very large ships (like cargo and cruise) can go under it, which you can see from these photos:

And this is the second bridge, the first one was hit by a huge ship and cars went over and people died.  Not a pretty picture.  Well, going over this bridge and the other large bridges here in South Florida gives me the creeps.  I always think about that, what if part of the bridge is gone and you’re going like 60 MPH and you can’t stop.  Then you go over the bridge, fall in the water, and your electric windows won’t open and the doors are jammed and the car is filling with water and your trapped and you die.

Yes, it’s a stupid irrational fear but it’s real.  I’m not afraid of heights or water or bridges.  It’s the being trapped part and then drowning.  When I am driving over them at night I go just fast enough to not be a problem but slow enough that if the cars a head of me suddenly disappear I can stop and not go over.  Silly, yes, but it’s just the way it is.
