Gay Days at Walt Disney World Magic Kingdom
I worked over the weekend at WDW Magic Kingdom and Saturday was the 16th annual Gay Days. I was excited to work during this day because I have never gone to a gay days nor had I worked a gay days event. I knew that there would a lot of red shirts as this is kind of the official color of shirt to wear on this day. I had a blast and will tell you all about it, but first, I want to tell you about the Friday before.
We were in our break room and the subject of the next day being gay days must have come up before I got there, as I walked into a conversation already in progress. This one guy we will call D is a bit of a homophobe as he asked me what about you Dan, would you have a problem with a dude hitting on you. I said no, why the hell would I care? Well, D stated that he just would not like it and he might say or do something that would get him in trouble if that happened. He left and this one girl we ill call A said she loved working gay days. It is the one day where she hears the words please and thank you more than any other. She was also really pissed at narrow minded D. I realized that no one there knows I’m gay. You see, I pop in to work Friday and Saturday and then drive home. I don’t go out to drink, eat, dance, or to movies or to watch TV with any of my coworkers. None of them really know me so they don’t know I’m gay.
Anyway, back to Saturday. It made me feel so good about myself. Why? Because I learned that there are a lot more people out there just like me than I ever knew existed. There were gay men of all shapes, sizes, colors, and nationalities. It was so cool to see this and to be reminded that a majority of gay men are not extremely fit, drop dead gorgeous, hung like a horse, porn stars. Sure there were some guys that were drop dead gorgeous and I hoped that they came into my line just to get a better look. But most of them were just like me, your average everyday gay guy and all of them had one thing in common. They were gay and they were proud of who they are. I applaud them for this and I say thank you for just being you. My coworker A was right too. As a whole the gay people were more polite than your average guest and were more likely to say please and thank you. They also seemed smarter and could count to 12 unlike a lot of people we encounter in our job at WDW.
A lot of the red shirts were t-shirts and many had graphics or phrases on them. Here are a few of my favorite:
Zippidy do da gay
Homolicious
Gadar Activated which included an outline of a human male form with a rainbow radar screen
