The Procedures

This will be a running update about the stupid esophagogastroduodenoscopy and colonoscopy I'm having tomorrow.

I spent most of my morning on the phone.  Everyone wants to know when and how they will be paid.  The facility is $530 out of pocket, the doctor is $1600 and I don't know the out of pocket yet, the anesthesiologist is $760.  What a pain!

I've not eaten today, only clear liquids.

At 4:00 PM I've started drinking the 1 gallon of liquid that is supposed to "clean me out" for tomorrow's procedures.  It tastes salty and is kind of thick.  I'm having trouble drinking as fast as I am supposed to.  It's supposed to be 10 onces every 10 minutes or so.

7:51 PM  I can't get that stuff down 10 ounces every 10 mins.  I'm only 1/2 done with it.  It's nasty and if I try to down it I gag and almost loose it.  Trying to get the rest done fast as possible.

11:00 PM I finally finished the gallon of liquid, in more than double the time it was supposed to take.  I was just gross.

Tuesday, April 10th

8:00 AM  I am waiting for Skot to get here.  They moved my admission time to 9:30 AM so he should be here shortly to drop me off.  I'm very nervous, not about the procedures but about being knocked out.

7:30 PM  Everything went well.  I sat in the waiting room for about 30 to 45 minutes.  Then I went back and they had be get in my lovely paper hospital gown.  They put in my IV and then I layed there for like an hour an 45 minutes.   As I was waiting, dreading this whole thing I realized why I was so nervous about being put to sleep, another post about that will follow.  Then they came and hooked me up to all kinds of stuff and wheeled me in to the OR.  They put me on O2, put this thing in my mouth to keep it open, then off to sleep I went.  I woke up and the nurse showed me a couple of pictures of my colon and stomach.  Then I fell back asleep.  Then I woke up again, got wheeled to a 4th room.  Got dressed, had a glass of apple juice, and then Skot came and took me home.  Then I slept until about 5 PM.  I meet with the doctor in a couple of weeks but it looks like I have Erosive Duodenitis and Hiatal Hernia as well as Erosive Gastitis.  The erosive gastitis and duodentis are areas of inflammation in the lining of the stomach and small intestines causing small areas of bleeding both probably from stress and too much stomach acid.  Will know more on April 23rd.

Oh no I can't even pronounce some of those words, but I do know what bleeding is.

I'm sorry to hear that. But I'm also relieved they did the tests so that you'd know for sure what was going on.

Keep us posted on what you find out on April 23rd!

In the mean time, what are they having you do for the stress and acid?
