It Was a More Simple Time

It's funny because you hear you're parents recant stories about when they were kids.  Now as an adult I find myself doing the same thing.  While I'm a big believer in progress and society moving forward sometimes I think that the past was better than the present or what the future may hold.

When I was a litte kid we lived in the last house on a dead end street.  We walked about a mile to and from school.  I'm not saying this is far, I did not think it was at the time.  We knew a majority of the people that lived on our street.  We were a neighborhood and we knew our neighbors.

About 6 or 7 houses down the street from us on the same side of the street was a cute little brick house and in it lived a German couple.  Every Christmas they decorated a big pine tree that was in their front yard right by the sidewalk.  It was one of those pine trees that was the perfect Christmas tree.  It was full and reached for the sky in a straight no nonsense way.  It had that perfect Christmas tree shape, a point at the top and full and round at the bottom in the perfect hue of evergreen green.  Part of their decorations included candy.  Suckers and hard candies of all types were tied to the tree like ornaments.  They did this for us, the children of the neighborhood.  We were encouraged to take a piece of candy when walking by.

I find it highly unlikely that something like that would happen today.  First of all there was not a kid in the neighborhood that walked up to the tree and took off tons of candy or stuffed their pockets.  Secondly, our parents were cool with this.  There was no danger in this.  This was simply a kind gesture by some very nice older people that did not have kids of their own for the kids in the neighborhood.

I hardly know my neighbors today.  We don't really talk or socialize or anything.  My one neighbor has 2 kids, one of which is very nice young boy who always says hi and asks how Yuli is doing (my dog).  The others are a Mexican family and they seem nice enough but is today's society neighbors just don't seem to socialize like back in the good old days.  So this is one area where I would like to see it like it use to be, when people were kind, safe, friendly, and neighbor had real meaning.
