Some Issues are Black & White... or Are They?
I have come to realize that I don't always see all the subtle shades of gray in a situation. There are many situations where I see things as black & white. I have a situation where an employee has used a company fuel card for about $100 worth of fuel for personal use. We have a company policy regarding such things and it states that any use of said cards for personal use is considered theft of company policy. I point this out specifically to our employees when I go over our policies and procedures guide. They sign off on this training and part of that form talks about the fuel card policy specifically. So in my mind this is a clear cut situation and the employee needs to be terminated. In my mind there can be no exceptions to this, if you steel anything at all you are fired. A couple other members of management and I have been debating this. One thinks that maybe we should look at circumstances and give the person another chance and that we can teach them better. I say that this is a basic idea of wrong and right and that their mommy should have taught them that steeling is wrong by the time they are in kindergarten. So I do wonder, am I being unreasonable? Should this person be given another chance? I really don't think so, but I do view this situation in black and white.

Wow, what a rough situation. I don't envy the position you must be in. I get pretty emotionally tied to people, so it would be hard to fire someone.
But is does seem like a serious case of stealing. If he gets away with it, he will do it again.
I think we've all "borrowed" a stamp from the office, or maybe used the office printer to print a photo for home. No biggies.
But $100 means he did it multiple times in large amounts of cash. It appears he made to effort to pay it back, and probably wasn't going to.
It sounds rough, but yeah I think he should be fired. I think the money itself is easily forgivable, and could be paid back. But it's the level of distrust. He knows you guys are softies, and could easily find another way to take advantage. You'll never trust him again.
