A Bitter Sweet Day

Today is not going to be an easy day for me.  Finally, 2 years after my house caught on fire, I am cleaning out the garage.  Anyone who knows me knows that I am a very organized and orderly person.  I keep a very neat and tidy home.  Sometimes it's a lot of work because I have a 3/2 on a 1 1/4 acre lot and the dog and cat won't help with housework or yard work.

Anyway, after the fire I had to have a cleaning and restoration service come in and take everything out of the house.  They came with trucks and literally inventoried everything I own and took it.  Then for the next 3 months they worked on restoration of my home and belongings.  There are a couple of photos below one from my red room and one from the hall. A majority of my belongings were not able to be saved.  However they were able to do a great job on some things like artwork and photos.  I don't know how they did it but there were able to restore save a lot of my photos and art, but not everything.  All my furniture and everything electronic was destroyed and had to be replaced.  You don't realize how much stuff you have until something like this happens.

All my personal items that could not be saved were brought back boxed and loaded into my garage for me to go through.  There are photos of my grandparents, CDs from my 20's, stuff from college, etc.  There were 18 moving boxes filled with said things.  I was able to go though some of them and toss out all the plastic things (like Tupperware) as most plastic things can't be saved because they can't remove the smoke smell from them.  I got it down to about half the number of boxes.  Then the garage became the place I no longer wanted to go into.  I stopped parking in there and it just became the untouched area.

Today is the day I am finally going to go through the remaining boxes of memories and say goodbye to them for good.  It's another step towards getting the house ready for the market (only 1 to 2 weeks away).  It's also the last step to close that chapter of my life, what was the worse year of my life.  The fire was the beginning of the year.  The rest of that year consisted of 4 hurricanes and being laid off from my job of 7 years in the 4th qtr of that year (about 130 people were laid off that day).  It just all added up to be one terrible year.

Although this a not an easy task I know when it's done that mentally I'll be in a better place.

Wow, all it takes is a few days of being behind and then it ends up being 2 weeks before I realize I haven't stopped by in awhile. Sorry.

2004 sounds like it was really terrible. I'm just glad you're safe and unharmed by the hurricanes and fire. I'm glad you're working to clean up the remaining items.
