Save Florida’s Families

This is a quote from one the leading Florida Governor’s race candidates:  “Strengthening families first requires a strong defense of the family itself. Without constitutional protection for traditional marriage, it could be merely a matter of time before a judge here in Florida redefines marriage and makes a ruling that creates a "right" to same-sex "marriage." There is an effort to place a Marriage Protection Amendment on the Florida ballot for the election next fall.  The Gallagher Campaign will support this effort and encourage every leader in the state of Florida to do so as well.”

I can see why this scares so many people that label themselves as conservative, Christian, or both.  After all, there is nothing more terrifying than two men that want to declare their love for each other and wish to spend the rest of their lives in a caring, nurturing, loving relationship.  After all, isn’t the teaching of Christ all about hate and discrimination?  No, wait… it is about love and acceptance.  It has always amazed me how people that claim to be Christian can so easily turn their backs on the very foundation of their beliefs in the name of their religion.  I believe it to be hypocrisy at its highest level.

Marriage has changed and evolved over the many years of human existence.  Today marriage is a way in which people join their lives in emotional and economic ways and form a household or family.  “The marriage of two people confers rights and obligations with respect to raising children, holding property, sexual behavior, kinship ties, tribal membership, relationship to society, inheritance, emotional intimacy, and love.”  Marriage is right that should be afforded to all US Citizens.

Family takes many forms in modern society.  There are many single moms, single dads, blended families due to one or both parents being previously married, etc.  Why do some people refuse to see that a mom, dad, and child (children) is not the only form of family.  There are plenty of men and women that marry and will never have kids, but they are are still a family.

The Declaration of Independence states “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just Powers from the consent of the governed…”

All men are created equal, unless they are homosexual.  All men are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, unless they are homosexual.  We all have the right to Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness, as long as your happiness does not include being in a loving, caring, committed same sex relationship.  Our government is by definition supposed to ensure that we are all treated equal and have the same rights.  However, conservative Christian politicians would prefer everyone conform to their beliefs and deny gays, not special rights but, equal rights as the rest of society.
